Looe Valley Railway

A curious feature of the Looe Valley line is that on leaving Liskeard the train has to follow a sweeping horseshoe-shaped descent, with gradients as steep as 1:34 for 2 miles, in order to reach Coombe Junction - just half a mile from Liskeard but 200 feet below! Here the conductor operates the points and the train changes direction to head south down the valley to Looe.

Monkey Sanctuary

The Monkey Sanctuary in Cornwall has been the home to a colony of woolly monkeys since 1964. Its original aim was to provide a stable setting in which woolly monkeys, rescued from lives of isolation in zoos or as pets, could live as naturally as possible. The Sanctuary has received world-wide recognition as the first place where this beautiful primate has survived and bred successfully in captivity. The aim is to secure a protected reserve in the Amazon for monkeys from the pet trade and if possible also to rehabilitate some of the Cornish group.

 Polperro

Polperro is a 13th-century fishing village with beautiful views, wonderful cliff-path walks along the South West Coast Path, interesting shops and superb pubs and restaurants serving local produce. Once upon a time the streets of Polperro rattled to the sound of pilchard barrels by day, brandy casks and tobacco bales by night. Wagon loads of contraband were hidden or stored awaiting their illicit journey to London over ancient tracks across Bodmin Moor.

 The Eden Project

Here is a dream turned into reality. In the barren and infertile waste of a disused china clay pit is the Eden Project - a series of "gardens", indoor and outdoor, which provide a variety of environments. Different environments produce different varieties of plants and so the project is able to display typical plants from many parts of the world, and to show not only how these affect their local regions, but also their roles in the global environment.
